Mabel Hamilton, an ag education champion and respected beef industry leader is being inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame.
Hamilton was nominated by the Canadian Angus Association.
Hall of Fame President Ted Menzies says Mabel Hamilton was raised on a ranch just outside of Calgary, and for more than 40 years has been involved in promoting the beef industry.
“She was involved in the Alberta Beef Producers and the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association that promoted more than just one breed of beef. She also was an early advocate of promoting agriculture. So, she was one of the individuals that helped bring Ag in the Classroom to bring the promotion where your food comes from long before it became vogue as it is today.”
She led the Canadian Angus Association at a time of unprecedented growth, moving the breed from the fourth largest to the largest.
Hamilton led the Beef Information Centre and helped to increase the industry connection to consumers.
She also was an advocate of traceability and helped create Canada’s national livestock traceability system, something that would prove crucial when BSE was discovered in 2003.
Mabel Hamilton will be inducted into the CAHF with fellow honorees Maurice Delage – an Agribusiness leader and hybrid canola visionary from Indian Head, Saskatchewan; Dr. Digvir Jayas – an innovative researcher and stored grain ecosystem expert from Winnipeg; and Ashok Sarkar – a legendary flour miller and Canadian grains advocate who now lives in Winnipeg.
The Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame recognizes and celebrates Canadians for their outstanding contributions to the agriculture and food industry.
The 2022 Hall of Fame induction ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, November 5, 2022 at the Liberty Grand in Toronto.
